When we mapped out our route for October 2022, the goal was ambitious: start from our home in Mumbai, cut through the heart of Madhya Pradesh, sweep across the entire Saurashtra peninsula in Gujarat, and loop back to Maharashtra. We planned for 11 days on the road, balancing long highway stretches with deep spiritual immersions and wildlife exploration.

We kicked off this incredible journey on October 16, 2022. It was a test of our endurance, but the blend of ancient temple architecture, vibrant city infrastructure, and sheer driving pleasure made every single kilometer worthwhile.

Before diving into the daily logs, it is essential to highlight the spiritual framework that defined this specific route.

Understand the spiritual zenith of the expedition

A core objective of this journey was to achieve a rare and powerful pilgrimage circuit. By carefully routing our path across three states, we successfully integrated one Char Dham site and four sacred Jyotirlingas into a single, continuous drive.

Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain (Jyotirlinga): Our first major spiritual milestone in Madhya Pradesh. This temple is profoundly unique as the idol faces south (Dakshinamurti), and it is deeply associated with the powerful Bhasma Aarti.

Dwarkadhish Temple, Dwarka (Char Dham): Reaching the western tip of Gujarat brought us to this monumental site. Dedicated to Lord Krishna, the “King of Dwarka”, this ancient, multi-storied limestone temple represents the western pillar of the holy Char Dham circuit.

Shri Nageshwar Temple, Dwarka (Jyotirlinga): Located just outside Dwarka on the route to Bet Dwarka, this temple houses the second Jyotirlinga of our trip. It is guarded by a massive, striking statue of Lord Shiva in a seated posture.

Somnath Temple, Prabhas Patan (Jyotirlinga): Known as the first among the twelve Jyotirlingas, this stunning Chalukya-style temple stands directly on the shores of the Arabian Sea, symbolizing eternal reconstruction and resilience.

Bhimashankar Temple, Maharashtra (Jyotirlinga): Nestled in the lush Sahyadri ranges, this site formed the final spiritual anchor of our journey, seamlessly completing our four-Jyotirlinga goal on the drive back home.

Here is our detailed, day-by-day travel diary.

Drive from Mumbai to Indore and explore Maheshwar (Day 1: October 16, 2022)

We initiated the drive at 4:00 AM sharp, setting a massive target of 589 kilometers for the day to reach Indore by 7:00 PM. Getting an early start is a non-negotiable requirement for a trip of this scale. Our first strategic halt was just outside Nashik at the Sri Dharma Chakra Prabhav Tirth. This newly built Jain temple is an absolute architectural marvel. It features a contemporary three-story design built entirely out of pink sandstone and white marble. The complex is incredibly spacious, housing a 100-room dharamshala exclusive to the Jain community and a bhojanalaya that serves exceptionally healthy food at affordable rates. We secured a peaceful darshan there to start our trip on a positive note.

Pushing forward into Madhya Pradesh, we diverted to Maheshwar. We spent time exploring the historic Ahilya Fort and walking along the serene Narmada Ghat, soaking in the history of the Holkar dynasty. We finally arrived in Indore by evening, settling in with our family. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the famous Chappan Dukan to experience the city’s vibrant, pure vegetarian street food culture.

Discover the manufacturing hubs and hills of Indore (Day 2: October 17, 2022)

We dedicated our second day to understanding the pulse of Indore. We began with a visit to Pitra Parvat, seeking blessings at the massive golden Hanuman statue perched high on the hill, which offered a beautiful panoramic view of the area.

To add a completely different educational flavor to our itinerary, we shifted from spiritual sites to industrial ones. We took a detour to visit the manufacturing facilities of Agro Pipes and the Bombay Brush Company. Observing the local manufacturing infrastructure, machinery, and production lines provided a fascinating contrast to the ancient sites we were visiting.

Experience the divine energy of Ujjain (Day 3: October 18, 2022)

We drove out of Indore and headed straight for the ancient city of Ujjain. Our morning consisted of visits to the Shri Chintaman Ganesh Temple and the highly revered Kal Bhairav temple, where the unique traditions of worship left a lasting impression.

The absolute highlight of the day, however, was our darshan at the Mahakaleshwar Temple. Securing blessings at our first Jyotirlinga of the trip was a profoundly moving experience. Following the darshan, we spent hours walking through the newly inaugurated Mahakaal Corridor. Championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the scale of the sandstone carvings, the 108 towering stambhas (pillars), and the intricate murals depicting Lord Shiva’s life are a spectacular display of modern civic and spiritual engineering.

Transition from Madhya Pradesh into Gujarat (Day 4: October 19, 2022)

This day was heavily focused on driving logistics. We bid a fond farewell to the excellent highways of Madhya Pradesh and crossed the state borders, officially saying “Hi” to Gujarat. We navigated the changing highway terrains, setting ourselves up for the deep dive into the Saurashtra peninsula over the coming days.

Enter the land of Lord Krishna in Dwarka (Day 5: October 20, 2022)

We arrived in the sacred, ancient city of Dwarka. The energy of the city is palpable. We headed straight to the Dwarkadhish Temple to secure our darshan. Navigating the crowds to witness the beautifully adorned deity inside the towering, intricately carved structure was a momentous occasion. This visit successfully marked the completion of our one and only Char Dham requirement for the expedition.

Explore Bet Dwarka and seek blessings at Nageshwar (Day 6: October 21, 2022)

We drove to the coast and took a ferry ride across the waters to reach Bet Dwarka, the island believed to be the original, historic residence of Lord Krishna. Exploring the narrow lanes and ancient temples on the island felt like stepping back in time.

Upon returning to the mainland, we drove to the Shri Nageshwar Temple. The towering, brightly colored Shiva statue visible from miles away guided our approach. We performed our darshan, successfully logging the second Jyotirlinga of our trip.

Relax at Shivrajpur Beach and drive the coastal roads (Day 7: October 22, 2022)

After days of intense temple visits and heavy driving, we took a necessary pause at Shivrajpur Beach. This Blue Flag-certified beach features pristine white sands and incredibly clear waters. It was the perfect environment to decompress, enjoy the ocean breeze, and recharge our batteries.

Later in the day, we embarked on one of the most scenic stretches of the entire trip, driving the beautiful coastal roads of Saurashtra. Cruising right alongside the Arabian Sea as we pushed southward was an absolute joy for any driving enthusiast.

Witness the grandeur of Somnath (Day 8: October 23, 2022)

We reached Prabhas Patan and approached the magnificent Somnath Temple. Standing on the temple grounds, with the massive stone architecture behind us and the endless expanse of the Arabian Sea crashing against the retaining walls in front of us, was a humbling experience. We secured our darshan, achieving the third Jyotirlinga of our journey.

Encounter wildlife in Sasan Gir (Day 9: October 24, 2022)

We shifted our focus entirely from ancient architecture to raw nature. We drove into the dense forests of the Sasan Gir region. We booked our slots and embarked on the Devaliya Jungle Safari. The open-air ride through the protected reserve was thrilling, and we were incredibly fortunate to spot the magnificent Asiatic lions roaming proudly in their natural habitat.

Visit Khodaldham, celebrate Diwali, and explore Ahmedabad (Day 10: October 25, 2022)

Driving through Kagvad, we made a strategic stop at the Khodaldham Mandir. The sheer scale and the intricate, symmetrical stone carvings of this massive temple complex are an absolute masterclass in modern Indian architecture and community effort.

We then pushed forward to Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad to celebrate the festive season of Diwali with our extended family. It was a joyous reunion. We visited the stunning Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar, taking in the magnificent architecture and the spiritual atmosphere. In the evening, we explored Ahmedabad’s modern civic infrastructure, walking across the stunning, newly built Atal Foot Overbridge and enjoying the cool night breeze along the beautifully developed Sabarmati Riverfront.

Conclude the expedition via Bhimashankar (Day 11: October 26, 2022)

It was finally time to head home. We began the long, determined descent from Gujarat back into Maharashtra. To perfectly cap off the spiritual goals of this trip, we routed our return through the lush, winding roads of the Sahyadri hills to visit the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga.

Securing this final darshan completed our ambitious four-Jyotirlinga circuit. From the hills, we pushed through the final stretch of highway traffic, pulling into Mumbai and officially concluding our 11-day, multi-state expedition. The car held up perfectly, and the memories of the thousands of kilometers we covered will stay with us forever.

Every great road trip requires a robust architecture and a grand vision.
