When we mapped out our route for November 2022, the goal was to execute a rapid, two-day loop starting from Mumbai, cutting through Nashik and Shirdi, reaching Aurangabad, and driving all the way back.

We initiated this massive 800-kilometer expedition on November 12, 2022. Balancing intense highway driving with deep spiritual immersions, we managed to cover two highly revered Jyotirlingas, a technological devotional park, and a UNESCO World Heritage site in just 48 hours.

Here is the exact day-by-day architectural and spiritual breakdown of how we executed this journey.

Understand the spiritual framework of the expedition

A core objective of this weekend was to secure blessings at two of the most ancient and powerful sites in Hindu theology, effectively logging the fifth and sixth Jyotirlingas of our personal road trip series.

Trimbakeshwar Temple (Nashik): Located at the source of the Godavari river, this shrine is incredibly unique. Unlike traditional shrines that feature a singular Shivling, the Jyotirlinga here embodies a trinitarian form representing Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva.

Grushneshwar Temple (Aurangabad): Recognized as the 12th and final Jyotirlinga referenced in the Shiva Purana. The name translates to “Lord of Compassion”. The temple is a stunning example of ancient red rock architecture and maintains incredibly strict traditional protocols for entry.

Execute the morning drive from Mumbai to Trimbakeshwar (Day 1: November 12, 2022)

We initiated the drive at exactly 4:00 AM. Setting out before dawn is a non-negotiable requirement for navigating out of Mumbai efficiently and beating the heavy highway traffic. Our first target was Trimbakeshwar, located approximately 172 kilometers away. While our navigation systems estimated a four-hour drive, the clear early-morning roads allowed us to push the pace. We covered the distance in just three hours, arriving just before 8:00 AM.

Upon entering the Trimbakeshwar area, we paid a nominal 50-rupee municipal toll for the vehicle. To optimize our time, we bypassed the distant public lots and opted for the VIP parking located immediately next to the temple gate, which cost 200 rupees. This strategic decision allowed us to avoid the massive weekend crowds. We removed our footwear, washed our hands, gathered fresh flowers, and proceeded into the sanctum for a highly peaceful darshan of the trinitarian Jyotirlinga.

Journey to Shirdi and experience Sai Teerth

Following the morning darshan, we strapped back into the vehicle and drove 126 kilometers from Trimbakeshwar to Shirdi. This brought our total driving distance for the morning to roughly 300 kilometers. Upon arriving in Shirdi, we immediately checked into our hotel to drop our luggage and refresh before walking to the main temple complex to secure the blessings of Sai Baba.

The absolute highlight of our afternoon was exploring Sai Teerth, India’s first devotional theme park. The entry fee was set at 799 rupees for adults and 499 rupees for children. The park merges spirituality with high-end immersive entertainment through four major tech-driven attractions. We participated in Lanka Dahan, an incredible 5D cinematic experience requiring 3D glasses. We also sat through the Dwarkamai robotic show, where highly advanced animatronic figures of Sai Baba and his followers delivered spiritual mantras.

Finally, we took the Teerth Yatra ride. This miniature train provides a visually stunning simulated tour of India’s most famous temples, including the Gateway of India, the Siddhivinayak Temple, Kedarnath, Badrinath, the Golden Temple, the Jagannath Temple, and the Meenakshi Temple. After an overwhelming day of driving and exploring, we concluded our evening and retired to our hotel in Shirdi.

Travel to Aurangabad for Grushneshwar darshan (Day 2: November 13, 2022)

We checked out of our Shirdi hotel early the next morning and commenced a 120-kilometer drive toward Aurangabad. Our primary objective was the Grushneshwar Temple.

Visiting Grushneshwar requires adhering to strict ancient traditions. To enter the inner chambers and physically touch the Jyotirlinga, men are mandated to be bare-chested. We respectfully removed our shirts, entered the sanctum, and successfully secured our blessings at the 12th Jyotirlinga, achieving the primary spiritual goal of our weekend.

Explore the ancient Ellora Caves and return to Mumbai

Located practically next door to Grushneshwar in the Sahyadri hills are the legendary Ellora Caves. We paid the entry fee of 40 rupees per person to explore this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Built between 600 and 1000 CE, the monumental complex comprises over 100 caves, though only 34 are currently open to the public. The site is a stunning historical representation of religious harmony, featuring 17 Hindu caves, 12 Buddhist caves, and 5 Jain caves. Walking through these massive rock-cut structures, admiring the intricate deity carvings and monasteries depicting the mythology of each religion, was an awe-inspiring educational experience.

With our sightseeing complete, we braced ourselves for the ultimate endurance test of the weekend. We loaded up the vehicle and executed a rigorous 380-kilometer marathon drive straight from Aurangabad back to Mumbai. By the time we pulled into our driveway, we had covered 500 kilometers in a single day, bringing our weekend total to exactly 800 kilometers.

An 800-kilometer weekend road trip demands tight logistics and high endurance.
