Vietnam. The name itself conjures images of emerald rice paddies, bustling street markets, and ancient temples. Having just returned from an unforgettable 9-day adventure, I’m thrilled to share my meticulously planned itinerary, along with all the tips, tricks, and hidden gems I discovered along the way. If you’re dreaming of a trip to this incredible country, you’re in the right place!
Our journey began in the vibrant chaos of Hanoi, whisked us away to the serene landscapes of Ninh Binh and the breathtaking beauty of Ha Long Bay, before immersing us in the charm of Da Nang and Hoi An, and finally, the dynamic energy of Ho Chi Minh City. Ready to dive in? Let’s go!
Before You Go: Essential Tips for Your Vietnam Adventure
- Currency Exchange: Exchange rates will fluctuate, so it’s wise to factor in potential changes.
- Group Spending: When traveling in a group, sometimes costs can be shared (e.g., taxis), which can reduce individual expenses.
- Bargaining is Key: Bargaining is expected in many markets and smaller shops, especially in Hanoi Old Quarter and Hoi An. Don’t be shy to haggle for a better price!
- Quality Check: Always check the quality of items carefully, especially silk and lacquerware.
- Keep Receipts: For higher-value items, it’s always a good idea to keep your receipts.
- Respect Local Customs: Dress modestly when visiting temples or attending cultural events.
- Try Local Cuisine: Vietnamese food is incredibly diverse and delicious. Be adventurous and try new dishes.
- Learn Basic Phrases: A simple “Xin chào” (hello) and “Cảm ơn” (thank you) goes a long way with locals.
- Stay Hydrated & Save Money: While drinking plenty of water is crucial in the humid climate, bottled water can be expensive. A pro-tip: buy 1.5-liter bottles from 24/7 convenience stores to save money. And if you’re a beer person, you’ll be happy to know it’s super cheap! (Just kidding, mostly. Stay hydrated with water too!)
- Traffic Awareness: Be cautious when crossing streets; traffic can be chaotic.
- No Littering: Help keep Vietnam beautiful by disposing of trash properly.
- Respect Buddhist Icons: Don’t touch or point at Buddha statues.
- Sunscreen & Insect Repellent: These are your best friends in Vietnam’s climate.
Reflections from My Journey: Insights & Practical Tips
Beyond the curated itinerary, our Vietnamese adventure offered a tapestry of personal experiences and invaluable lessons that I’m eager to share.
- Flights: A Traveler’s Note: We flew VietJet while going to Hanoi and Air India on our return journey. From my experience, VietJet flights can be a bit challenging due to a lack of legroom and frequent delays. If you have the option, choosing Air India offers a more comfortable experience with better meals.
- Embrace Walking for True Immersion: Here’s a tip that truly transformed our trip: try to walk everywhere instead of taking a cab! While walking, you truly get to see their people, observe the local shops, soak in the culture, and witness the authentic way they sit, eat, and live. There’s so much to learn just by being present on the streets. We never took a single cab during our entire 9-day journey, averaging 15,000 to 20,000 steps a day, sometimes even 25,000 steps! It was exhausting at times, but we enjoyed every single bit of it. If extensive walking isn’t for you, Grab (their version of Uber/Ola) is readily available and a convenient alternative.
- Shopping & Value: While Vietnam boasts an impressive array of goods, from exquisite first copies to local crafts, I found that many items, particularly clothing and electronics, were priced similarly to what one might find back in India. While the quality often surpassed expectations, the cost, coupled with the logistics of transporting bulkier purchases, led me to conclude that extensive shopping might not be the primary highlight for every traveller. Focus on unique local treasures rather than everyday items!
- Navigating Vegetarian Cuisine: For those, like myself, who adhere to a pure vegetarian diet, dining can present a delightful challenge. While Indian restaurants are indeed present in major cities, their availability can be limited, especially when exploring tourist points or if they’re a distance from your accommodation. My strongest advice? Embrace the practice of carrying a well-stocked supply of your favourite Indian vegetarian staples – think comforting theplas and mohanthal, an assortment of biscuits, homemade protein bars and homemade chocolates. This proved to be a lifesaver, ensuring we always had satisfying options. Even at hotel breakfasts, where choices for Indian vegetarians were often confined to fresh fruits, bread, butter, and jam, our foresight paid off.
- A Culinary Oasis at Ba Na Hills: Speaking of food, a truly memorable meal was the pure vegetarian lunch we savoured at Ba Na Hills. It felt like a long-awaited feast, and we thoroughly enjoyed the generous spread. It’s worth noting that this delightful Indian restaurant was conveniently part of our tour package, offering a welcome respite for our palates. And while you’re there, be sure to try the roller coaster ride – it’s a must-try experience! We had to pay for it as it wasn’t included in our package, but it was absolutely worth it for the fun.
- Coffee Lover’s Paradise: If you’re a coffee enthusiast, make sure to stock up on coffee beans! We bought so much that it will last us for at least 6 months to a year. Vietnam truly has some of the best coffees. A must-try in Hanoi is the unique egg, salt, and coconut coffee – you won’t find the same exquisite taste in Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang.
- The Heart of Vietnam: Its People: What truly resonated with me was the spirit of the Vietnamese people. They are remarkably sweet-natured and exude a genuine happiness. Their industriousness is evident in their early starts and early finishes to the day, much like my own rhythm. Evenings often come alive with the sounds of karaoke – a beloved pastime that clearly serves as a joyful stress-buster. Their politeness and respectful nature are truly admirable and add to the wonderful atmosphere of the country.
- Climate Considerations: The climate during our visit was generally pleasant, but it’s important to be mindful of the rainy season, which can lead to localized flooding. A little preparation for potential showers, such as a light rain jacket or umbrella, can go a long way.
- Cu Chi Tunnels – A Personal Opinion: While the Cu Chi Tunnels are a significant historical site, I personally found the experience a bit underwhelming. If you’re short on time during your trip, and perhaps historical war sites aren’t your primary interest, you might consider skipping this in favour of another activity that better suits your preferences. This is just my opinion, of course, but it’s worth considering if you need to optimize your itinerary.
Day 1: Hanoi’s Heartbeat – Old Quarter & Train Street Thrills
Our adventure kicked off in Hanoi. After landing at 7:10 AM, we headed to the San Premium Hotel.
As evening approached, we headed to the famous Train Street. It’s a narrow track lined with tiny cafes where trains actually pass by incredibly close! It’s free to enter if you purchase a coffee (around INR 150-300/~45,000-90,000 VND).

- Where We Stayed: San Premium Hotel, 36 P. Hà Trung, Hàng Bông, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam
- Shopping in Hanoi: Đồng Xuân Market (Hanoi’s largest covered market) and Hàng Bông Street for art galleries, silk, and clothing. The Hanoi Weekend Night Market (Friday to Sunday nights) in the Old Quarter is a lively mix of food, fashion, souvenirs, and live performances – don’t miss it if your trip aligns!
Day 2: Ninh Binh’s Serenity – Ancient Capitals & Cave Climbs
Day two was a full-day tour to Ninh Binh, often called “Ha Long Bay on land.” We started early with breakfast at 6:30 AM and departed by 7:30 AM.
Our first stop was Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, where we visited the temples of Vietnamese kings.

Next, we went on a 30-minute bicycle ride to a temple and back.

Following that, we began the ascent of Mua Cave, a 500-step climb offering breathtaking panoramic views at the summit. Essentials for this activity include sneakers, water, and a towel.

Our highlight was the Tam Coc Boat Ride, a serene journey that takes you through caves and rice fields aboard a traditional rowboat. Remember to pack a hat, sunglasses, and a shawl for this experience.

Day 3: The Majestic Ha Long Bay
Today was all about the stunning Ha Long Bay! We enjoyed a full-day trip, immersing ourselves in its incredible stone mountains, caves, and sandy beaches. Our tour included a hotel pickup from the Hanoi Old Quarter and a shuttle bus transfer.
We cruised through the Ha Long Bay which houses 1000+ limestone mountains.

We explored the famous Sung Sot Cave, also known as “Surprise Cave,” admiring its shimmering stalactites that take on countless unique shapes.

We had the opportunity to take a bamboo boat to Luon Cave. This was a truly unique experience, as we spent some time directly in the water.
Feeling the sun on our skin as we passed by Ti Top Island was lovely.

Then after returning from Ha Long Bay we visited Hanoi’s Beer Street to see the lively atmosphere.
Day 4: Da Nang – Coastal Charm & City Exploration
Today was a travel day, featuring a flight from Hanoi to Da Nang. However, we had the morning free, which we used to explore.
Morning in Hanoi
Our morning began with a visit to the serene Hoan Kiem Lake, which offers a perfect introduction to Hanoi’s calm amidst the city’s lively atmosphere.
Next, we immersed ourselves in the Hanoi Old Quarter. This ancient labyrinth of streets truly is a feast for the senses, showcasing colonial architecture and an endless array of street food options. When exploring here, wear comfortable walking shoes and carry cash and water. The vibrant yellow buildings make stunning photo spots. To truly capture the energy, don’t be afraid to walk in the scooter lanes (carefully, of course!), but always be aware of approaching scooters.

- Where We Stayed in Da Nang: Ibiza Riverfront Hotel, 205 Đ. Trần Hưng Đạo, An Hải Bắc, Sơn Trà, Đà Nẵng

- Shopping in Da Nang: For a modern shopping experience, Vincom Plaza Da Nang has international and local brands, a supermarket, and dining. For a more traditional vibe, Han Market offers local produce, souvenirs, and textiles.
Day 5: Ba Na Hills & The Golden Bridge’s Grandeur
This day was a true highlight: a tour to Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge (Cau Vang)! We ascended Ba Na Hill via one of the world’s most impressive cable car systems (ranked by CNN!).

Seeing the giant hands of the Golden Bridge holding it up is truly an iconic moment.

Sun World Ba Na Hills offers a unique experience, with all four seasons in a single day and a diverse range of festive and recreational activities. It’s a fantastic entertainment complex for all ages. As mentioned, the lunch here at the Indian restaurant was a standout for us pure vegetarians! And while you’re there, be sure to try the roller coaster ride – it’s a must-try experience! We had to pay for it as it wasn’t included in our package, but it was absolutely worth it for the fun.

Day 6: Marble Mountains, Ancient Hoi An & River Romance
Our day began with a visit to Son Tra Peninsula and the impressive Linh Ung Pagoda with its giant Goddess of Mercy statue. After lunch, we explored the Marble Mountains.

The evening was dedicated to the enchanting Hoi An Ancient Town. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a magical place, especially in the evening when lanterns illuminate the streets.

We had dinner at a local restaurant before heading back to our hotel in Da Nang.
- Shopping in Hoi An: This is the place for tailored clothing (Dresses/Shirts: 500,000 – 2,000,000+ VND/1500-6000+ INR, Suits: 1,500,000-5,000,000+ VND/4500-15,000+ INR) – you can get beautiful custom-made items quickly! Also, look out for lanterns (small: 50,000-150,000 VND / 150-450 INR, larger: 200,000-500,000+ VND/600-1500+ INR) and silk products (Scarves: 200,000-800,000 VND/600-2400 INR, ties: 150,000-500,000 VND/450-1500 INR, clothing: 500,000 – 2,000,000+ VND/1500-6000+ INR). Remember, bargaining is expected here!
Day 7: Ho Chi Minh City – Southern Charm & City Life
Another travel day.
The morning was spent on the Da Nang beach.

We flew from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City.
- Where We Stayed: HAPPY LIFE GREEN HOTEL, 549 Đ. Trần Hưng Đạo, Cầu Kho, Quận 1, Hồ Chí Minh.
- Shopping in Ho Chi Minh City: Ben Thanh Night Market (District 1) is very popular for clothes and local eats.
Day 8: Mekong Delta’s Tranquil Waters
Today, we embarked on a fascinating 1-day Mekong Delta tour from Ho Chi Minh City to Mỹ Tho – Bến Tre.

We visited the Vinh Trang Pagoda, an ancient southern architectural gem built in the middle of the 19th century.

The highlight was exploring the Mekong region by motorboat and rowing sampan, witnessing the daily life of locals in the Delta.

We enjoyed fresh fruit and honey tea while listening to traditional Vietnamese folk music.
- Souvenirs: The Mekong Delta is known for coconut products (Candies: 30,000-100,000 VND/90-300 INR per pack, oils: 100,000-300,000 VND/300-900 INR, handicrafts: 50,000 – 500,000 VND/150-1500 INR) and fresh seasonal fruits.
Day 9: Cu Chi Tunnels & Departure
Our final day in Vietnam started with a poignant visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels system in the morning. This intricate network of underground tunnels offers a powerful insight into Vietnam’s wartime history.

After exploring the tunnels, we were dropped off at our centrally located hotel in District 1, ready for our evening flight back to Mumbai.

Key takeaways: Always bargain in markets, prioritize hydration (and smart water buying!), consider your flight choices, and embrace the delicious local cuisine (and pack your own food if you’re a pure vegetarian!). Don’t forget to indulge in the fantastic Vietnamese coffee, especially Hanoi’s unique blends! And if time is tight or historical war sites aren’t your top interest, consider optimizing your itinerary around the Cu Chi Tunnels. Most importantly, embrace walking to truly immerse yourself in the vibrant local culture!
This trip was an incredible blend of history, culture, natural beauty, and bustling city life. Vietnam truly has something for everyone. I hope this detailed itinerary and these tips inspire your own unforgettable journey to this captivating country! Happy travels!
